Mammoth Study Completed

April 1990

Paving the way for a horizontal well, Mammoth Geo Inc., Barrackville, W. Va., has completed geophysical surveys for the U.S. Department of Energy's Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC).

Mammoth's work consisted of 5430 ft of dual-depth, tri-potential earthresistivity geophysical surveys. The surveys mapped and delineated natural fracture systems in the vicinity of the HW-1 Hardy horizontal well, in Elmwood Quadrangle, Putnam County, W.Va.

The well, a joint venture between the DOW and Cabot Oil & Gas Corp., was spudded in December 1989 with a planned horizontal reach of 2000 ft in the Upper Devonian, Brallier Shale, at a vertical depth of 4500 ft. Mammoth's resistivity survey mapped 21 well-defined natural fracture zones ranging from near vertical to 75° orientation.

Additional work for the project included the remote sensing lineament mapping of the Elmwood Quadrangle. More than 365 mi of potential natural fracture zones were mapped from Side Looking Airborne Radar and National High Altitude Photography.
